What is AEO?
Answer engine optimization, how it overlaps with GEO, and why the distinction is mostly about scope.
What it means
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of shaping content so it becomes the direct answer to a question, rather than one link among several. That answer can take several forms: a featured snippet excerpted from a page, a knowledge panel assembled from a knowledge base rather than any single page, a voice assistant response read aloud by Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant, or an AI answer box. An answer engine collapses a results page into a single response: someone asks a question and gets one answer, often without a click through to a page at all.
Why it is different
Ranking on a results page and being the answer are not the same goal. A single response is chosen and shown or spoken above everything else, so there is no second-place result for a reader to scan past instead. That favors content that leads with a clear, self-contained answer, uses question-style headings that mirror how people actually ask, and carries structured data, FAQ and HowTo schema, that helps a machine lift the right passage cleanly.
AEO and GEO overlap but are not the same target. AEO is about winning a single slot: most often a featured snippet, a voice response, or a knowledge panel. GEO is about being mentioned or cited inside the longer, synthesized answers a generative engine composes from several sources at once. The same foundations, clear, authoritative content and consistent entity information, support both, but AEO aims at one slot and GEO aims at a share of a composed answer.
What it looks like
Someone asks a voice assistant "what's the best dentist near me?" and hears a single answer read aloud, not a list to choose from. AEO is the work behind winning that slot: leading with a direct answer in the first sentence, structuring the page around the question itself as a heading, adding FAQ or HowTo markup, and keeping entity details, name, category, and for a local business, address and hours, consistent everywhere they appear.
