GEO versus SEO

What carries over from search engine optimization, what does not, and which habits actively mislead.

What it means

SEO and GEO sound like variations on the same idea, and they share real ancestry: both reward authoritative, well-structured content. But they win visibility through different mechanisms, in different places, and the habits built for one do not automatically transfer to the other.

Why it is different

A search engine returns a ranked list of links, and the reader scans and clicks. A generative engine composes one answer and names a handful of sources inside it, and the reader often never sees a list at all. That difference in output shape changes what earns visibility.

Dimension SEO GEO
Goal Rank a page high in a results list Be mentioned or cited inside a synthesized answer
Unit of visibility A ranked link A mention or a citation
Where it happens Google, Bing, and other search engines ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Grok
How visibility is won Backlinks, keywords, technical health, authority Authoritative answers, entity consistency, third-party citations, freshness
How it is measured Rankings, impressions, clicks Mentions, citations, share of voice

Some SEO habits carry over cleanly: authority still matters, structure still matters, freshness still matters. Others actively mislead. Chasing a keyword's exact phrasing does nothing for an engine that paraphrases the question before it answers, and optimizing purely for a ranking position ignores that a page can rank first and still never get quoted, because ranking and being quotable are different qualities.

What it looks like

Two pages can both be well-optimized by SEO's own standards, backlinks, keyword targeting, clean technical health, and only one of them gets cited when someone asks an AI assistant the underlying question. The gap is usually structural: the cited page states its answer plainly near the top and backs it with evidence an engine can lift directly, while the other buries the same answer inside paragraphs written to satisfy a keyword rather than a reader. GEO is the discipline of closing that gap; SEO on its own does not close it automatically.
